According to the 2011 census, the city has 3387 inhabitants, which is a decrease in population compared to the 2002 census (4309 inhabitants). The same census data shows that an overwhelming majority, 98% , describe themselves as Serbs .

Sports
Football is the most popular sport in Lučani. The local football club FK Mladost Lučani has played in the Serbian Super League , the highest Serbian league in men's football , since the 2014/15 season . The club took part in the qualifying round for the UEFA Europa Legue in the 2017/2018 season . In the 2017/2018 season they lost in the final of the Serbian Football Cup against Partizan Belgrade .
