Lucas José Obes (* 1782 in Buenos Aires , † November 1838 in Niterói , Brazil ) was a Uruguayan politician of Argentine origin.

Life

He first studied at the Colegio Nacional Nuestra Señora de Monserrat in Córdoba and then finished his studies in Madrid . From there , Obes , who worked as a lawyer , returned to the Río de la Plata in 1804 and settled in Montevideo . Later he returned to his hometown, where he became an advisor to Vice-King Baltasar de Cisneros and was in contact with Mariano Moreno both before and after the May Revolution .

In 1810 he went to Montevideo again, was arrested by Governor Gaspar de Vigodet , sent as a prisoner to Spain and finally ended up in London.

In 1814 he returned to South America in the Banda Oriental before moving back to Buenos Aires in 1821. There he was detained again for a few weeks due to an unclear incident.

After his release, he moved to Montevideo several times. Here he worked as an enthusiastic supporter of Uruguayan independence and eventually became finance minister in the government of Juan Antonio Lavalleja and under José Rondeau .

From December 20, 1833 to January 7, 1835, he then held the post of Foreign Minister of Uruguay . His successor was José Maria Reyes .
