Luchenza is a city of 12,600 inhabitants (2018 census) in southern Malawi . It is located in the flat grassland between the Shire highlands and the Mulanje massif in the Thyolo district . The Thyolo - Mulanje road and the Malawian Beira - Blantyre railway line run through them . Shops, tailors, woodworking, blacksmiths and glaziers can be found in the city. The houses are partly made of solid concrete. From here, Thyolo tea and wood from Mulanje are transported to Blantyre. The grassland itself, which extends 100 kilometers to the north to Lake Chilwa and surrounds it as a huge swamp area, is sparsely populated because it lies in the rain shadow of high mountains and is irrigated by them.

Luchenza has elementary and secondary schools and a hospital.
