Luciano Simoni (* 1932 in Italy ; † 2010 ) was an Italian composer and scientist .

Life

Luciano Simoni was a composer, but also an engineer and scientist, as a full professor at the University of Bologna . As a composer, Luciano Simoni was instructed by Lino Liviabella , composition teacher and director of the Conservatory of Bologna and student of Ottorino Respighi . Simoni studied harmony, instrumentation and counterpoint with Liviabella. At the same time he attended courses at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bologna, which he graduated with honors in July 1959. After graduating from university, he continued his intensive compositional activity: In 1960–61 he composed his 1st symphony op.11 for large orchestra, with which he applied to a symphonic selection in 1975 organized by the Cassa Nazionale Musicisti. The commission awarded the completely unknown composer the prestigious individual prize, which changed the life of Luciano Simoni, who from now on devoted himself to musical composition with renewed vigor. From 1983 to 1988 and from 1993 to 1997 Simoni was the musicians' representative on the board of directors of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. This enabled him to come into contact with the official music world, quite differently from the university.
Luciano Simoni died in 2010.

In order to devote himself entirely to composition, Simoni decided to withdraw from his professorship early.
His name as a composer now increasingly spread abroad.
On September 16, 2005 , the Magnificat and the Requiem della Misericordia were performed in Târgu Mureș , Romania , in a concert in memory of John Paul II . The great success prompted the organizers to hold further “composer evenings”. On September 7th, 2006 the world premiere of the 5th Symphony op.63; on June 29, 2007 a new performance of the Missa Solemnis op.28, on September 25, 2008 the world premiere of the cello concerto and a new performance of the 1st symphony. All concerts were performed by the Târgu-Mures Philharmonic under the direction of Romeo Rimbu.

The composer was also celebrated in Bologna in September 2006 with a composer's evening "Homage to Simoni" and in 2007 and 2008 with concerts by the Ensemble Respighi orchestra, which achieved great success.
