Lucy Anderson (born December 12, 1797 in Bath , † December 24, 1878 in London ; born Lucy Philpot ) was an English pianist and piano teacher of Queen Victoria .

biography

Lucy Anderson, the daughter of a music teacher in Bath, initially received lessons from her father and a cousin. She moved to London around 1818, where she soon earned a reputation as an outstanding pianist. In 1820 she married George Frederick Anderson , who was to be appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 1848 . In 1822, Lucy Anderson became the first woman to appear in a Royal Philharmonic Society concert . In 1830 she performed Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto for the first time , one of her repertoire works. In 1829 she appeared at the Birmingham Festival , in 1834 an appearance in Paris is documented. In 1838 she took over the solo part of the London premiere of Felix Mendelssohn's 2nd piano concerto .

In 1830 Lucy Anderson was introduced to the English royal court and from 1834 she was the piano teacher of the then princess, later Queen Victoria , and later also taught her children as court pianist. She also taught at the Royal Academy of Music . The pianist Kate Loder was one of her students . In 1862 she retired from the concert stage.
