Life

Lucy Madox Brown was the only daughter of Ford Madox Brown and Elizabeth Bromley (1818–46). She was born on July 19, 1843 in Paris. In 1844 the parents settled in England and in 1846 their mother died.

Between 1855 and 1857 she lived with the Rossettis and received lessons from Maria Francesca and her mother Frances Rossetti.

From 1868 she received drawing lessons from her father and assisted him in his studio. She mainly painted watercolors. The following year she exhibited at the Royal Academy. A watercolor, 'Après le Bal,' exhibited at the Dudley Gallery in 1870 received a lot of attention. 'Romeo and Juliet in the Vault' (1871) followed; 'The Fair Geraldine' (1872) also watercolors and 'Ferdinand and Miranda playing Chess' (1872), as well as 'Margaret Roper receiving the Head of her Father' (1873). “Romeo and Juliet” from 1871 (Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton) is widely regarded as her masterpiece. Lucy and her half-siblings Cathy and Oliver served as models for Romeo and Juliet.

After her marriage to William Michael Rossetti on March 31, 1874 , she gave up painting.

They had five children, all of whom were given the surname Madox:

  • September 1875 Olivia Frances Madox, married Antonio Agresti in 1897
  • February 1877 Gabriel Arthur Madox, became an electrical engineer with his own company, married Dora Slater Lewis in 1901, son: Geoffrey William Madox
  • November 1879 Helen Maria Madox, painted miniatures, married Gastone Angeli in 1903
  • April 1881 Mary Elizabeth Madox, studied biology, and Michael Ford Madox † 1883 (twins)

In 1890 she published her book Life of Mrs. Shelley in the Eminent Women Series .

When she contracted tuberculosis, a stay in Italy was supposed to bring relief. However, her lungs failed and she died in the Hotel Victoria, San Remo, on April 12, 1894. She was buried in the La Foce Cemetery in San Remo.
