Ludwig Gottlieb Buchner

Ludwig Gottlieb Buchner (born August 27, 1711 in Darmstadt ; † January 1, 1779 there ) was a German librarian .

Life

Ludwig Gottlieb Buchner was born in Darmstadt in 1711 as the son of archivist Johann August Buchner (1674–1735) and his second wife Maria Philippine Reuss (1689–1715). The other stages in life are not known.

After the death of Johann Martin Wenck in December 1761, Buchner was given the management of the Darmstadt court library in 1762 . He held this position until he retired due to illness in 1777. During his tenure, the holdings of the Hanau Library, which had already been acquired under Johann Hagenbusch , but had previously been housed separately, were spatially and materially integrated into the court library. Likewise, the valuable book stocks from the estate of the secret government and feudal councilor Johann Jakob Hombergk zu Schenklengsfeld (1708–1765) were integrated into the court library. The private collection acquired by Landgrave Ludwig VIII (Hessen-Darmstadt) in 1767 was particularly rich in works on German history and constitutional law and thus complemented the court library in an excellent way.

The increase in library holdings also resulted in a move within the Darmstadt Palace, which was organized by Buchner. The previous rooms in the bell tower were given up in 1768 and rooms in the northwestern part of the new castle (De la Fosse Bau) were moved into.

Buchner was replaced as head of the court library in 1777 after a long period of inability to work. Ludwig Gottlieb Buchner died on New Year's Day 1779 in his hometown at the age of 67.
