Ludwig Grünberger (born April 24, 1839 in Prague , Austrian Empire ; died December 12, 1896 there ) was a Bohemian composer and pianist.

Life

Ludwig Grünberger came from a wealthy family, so he was able to devote himself to music even in his youth. First he received lessons from František Škroup , then he studied composition with court conductor Julius Rietz in Vienna and with Adolf Reichel at the Dresden Conservatory. Grünberger had numerous appearances abroad, including in Norway, where he made friends with Niels Gade . He composed more than 200 works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral music and art songs. Several of his works have been published by renowned publishers. Ludwig Grünberger was buried in the Protestant cemetery in the Strašnice district of Prague.

Work (selection)

  • His only work for the stage is the one-act musical drama Die Heimkehr , based on a libretto by Rudolf Christof Jenny (1858–1917), which received considerable attention at its premiere in 1894. The action takes place on the evening of the summer solstice, in a village on the island of Capri. Topics are jealousy, murder and escape.
