Ludwig Gramminger

Ludwig Gramminger , also called "Wiggerl" Gramminger, (born June 11, 1906 in Munich ; † August 28, 1997 there ) was a mountain rescue pioneer and belonged to the elite of German mountaineers .

He had been a member of the mountain rescue service since 1925 and had a decisive influence on it. In mountain rescue he did pioneering work in the development of the stretching rail, the steel cable winch, the Akja and the technique of recovery from the steepest of walls. He is the inventor of the Gramminger seat named after him . Through his work, Gramminger made a significant contribution to rescuing many people from mountain difficulties. He succeeded in the first sensational mountain rescue from the Hochwanner north face in the Wetterstein and in 1957 one of his most spectacular rescue operations with international participation in the north face of the Eiger .

"... In snowstorms, at night and in fog, the Italian Claudio Corti was rescued with a steel cable winch, which was Gramminger's invention, after eight days without serious injuries and transported to the Eiger summit."
