Ludwig Helmken

Ludwig Helmken (born May 31, 1911 in Bremen ; † April 13, 1996 ) was a German lawyer , entrepreneur and politician ( FDP ) and a Bremen senator.

Family, education and work

Helmken was the son of a lawyer in Bremen. After graduating from high school, he studied law and political science as well as history and philosophy. He then worked as a research assistant at Kiel University and was released by the Nazis in 1933. In 1934 he was a legal trainee and in 1937 he passed his second state examination. In 1938/38 he worked as a department head at the Bremen Chamber of Commerce . In the Second World War he served as a soldier from 1939 to 1945, most recently as a first lieutenant .

From 1946 to 1952 he was in-house counsel at the Bremen Chamber of Commerce. In early 1953 he became a member of the management of a tobacco company and was a senator from March 1953. Following his political work as a senator, he worked as managing director and board member of Brinkmann GmbH (cigarette and smoking tobacco factories), since 1963 of Martin Brinkmann AG in Bremen .

He had been married to Meta Weiß since 1941.

Politics, memberships

In 1937 Helmken joined the NSDAP . Since 1934 he was a member of the National Socialist People's Welfare (NSV) and in the National Socialist Lawyers ' Association . In 1948 he was denazified as exonerated .

After the war he was a member of the BDV / FDP. From 1951 to 1953 he was a member of the Bremen citizenship . From March 25, 1953 to December 21, 1959 he served as Senator for Foreign Trade of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in the Senate of Wilhelm Kaisen (SPD) as the successor to Senator Gustav Wilhelm Harmssen (BDV / FDP).

He had been a commercial member of the Haus Seefahrt Foundation since 1958 .
