Ludwig Heusner (physician)
Ludwig Heusner (born November 28, 1844 in Boppard ; † January 27, 1916 in Gießen ) was a German orthopedist and surgeon and head of a hospital in Barmen .
Life
Heusner was born as the son of the district physician Carl Heusner . He attended grammar school in Koblenz and studied medicine at the universities of Berlin, Heidelberg, Würzburg, Bonn and Kiel. In 1868 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD.
During the Franco-Prussian War he worked as a field assistant doctor with the field artillery war crew in Spandau . After the war, Heusner settled in Barmen (Marienstraße 3) as a general practitioner. Through his acquaintance with Friedrich Adolph Sander , he was inspired to do his scientific and popular work in the field of hygiene and public health care.
As the successor to Friedrich Sander, he was responsible for the management of the old Barmer Hospital on Kleine Werth, which opened in 1841, from January 1, 1878, until April 1, 1912. Together with his friend, the secret medical councilor Carl Erasmus, Heusner founded the "Association of Lower Rhine-Westphalian Surgeons" in Düsseldorf on May 8, 1898. Heusner was chairman of this association from 1898 to 1899, from 1902 to 1903 and in 1911.
In 1903, on the occasion of his 25th anniversary in office, he was appointed professor as senior physician and senior physician. According to his efforts, the Barmer Klinikum was built, which was officially inaugurated on July 27, 1911 as the Barmen Municipal Hospital in the Schönebeck .
In 1904 Heusner became President of the German Society for Orthopedics and in 1912 was elected an honorary member.
Heusner took his retirement home in Bonn and died during a spa stay in Giessen. His tomb in the Unterbarmer cemetery has been preserved. It is one of the Wuppertal graves of honor .
