Ludwig Matthias Anton Brammer (* 1774 in Itzehoe ; † 1847 in Altona ) was a German painter .

Life

The ancestors of Ludwig Matthias Anton Brammer are not known. In the 1790s, the native of Itzeho moved to Altona, where he began training in Hinrich Dultz's trading business . Dultz described him more as a man of letters who "actually came from the pen". In 1803 Brammer Dultz married daughter Metta, with whom he had two sons and three daughters. He later bought shares in his father-in-law's company and was at times a wealthy businessman.

The trading company brought by Brammer suffered an economic slump in 1808 and had to file for bankruptcy in 1825. Brammer then set up a whalebone factory and later a cigar factory, but had little success with either company. Occasionally he taught drawing and tried to improve his income. His life was characterized by frequent changes of residence. He left only a small fortune when he died.

Working as a painter

In addition to his work, Brammer was also an amateur painter. He learned in particular from Anton Dusch, but also from Friedrich Rosenberg and Jes Bundsen . He taught painting to his son Hermann Ferdinand Brammer himself.

Brammer chose primarily local motifs and took part in numerous art exhibitions in Altona and Hamburg . A self-portrait in oil is considered the best work.

Works

Well-known oil paintings by Brammer include:

  • A self-portrait, dated 1807, which can be found in the Altona Museum .
  • Several small "moonlight pictures".
  • A lime distillery south of Neumühlen , probably painted in 1838.
  • A “View of Blankenese with Süllberg ”, painted in 1831.
  • An oil painting by the Hamburg fire from 1842.
  • A “View from Flottbeker Park” in oil, 1845
  • A "View of the Plöner See with Castle" in oil, 1846
  • In addition, two views of the Nienstedten boys' education institution painted around 1835 are attributed to him.

In addition to the paintings, Brammer made lithographs. Together with Heinrich Berger he drew Flottbeck's Park with Teufelsbrück. In 1831 and 1832 he made nine small pen drawings of landscapes.
