Jes Bundsen - View of the Palmaille

Jes Bundsen (born September 16, 1766 in Assens , † September 22, 1829 in Altona ) was a painter , draftsman and drawing teacher.

Live and act

Born on Funen , Bundsen was the son of a merchant. His brother was the architect Axel Bundsen . Instead of studying theology, he followed his brother's example and attended the Copenhagen Art Academy . After graduating with two silver medals in 1786, he moved to the Dresden Art Academy . At the end of the 1780s he went to Gut Knoop , where he gave drawing lessons on behalf of Heinrich Christoph von Baudissin . In 1795 he moved to Altona, where he taught as a drawing teacher at the Christianeum . He taught according to the rules of the beginner classes that he knew from Copenhagen.

Bundsen, who worked in Altona and Hamburg until the end of his life , gave unpaid courses in specialist drawing, copies of works by important artists and works based on plaster casts. The courses took place at a Sunday school in Altona, which offered advanced training for apprentices. Bundsen was committed to founding the Altona Art Association and exhibited at the first art exhibitions that took place in Altona.

Works

Jes Bundsen meticulously captured architecture in particular in the picture. He painted Hamburg churches or the palmaille . Since he orientated himself extremely closely to the original and allowed himself little artistic freedom, the works sometimes appear a bit stiff. However, they are an excellent source for research on cultural history.

Most of his paintings can be seen in the Statens Museum for Kunst . The Hamburger Kunsthalle has, among other things, twelve etchings. These show the remains of the Hamburg Cathedral , built in 1806, the Palmaille from 1823/24, the “Sunday School” from 1822 and the “Parade of the orphans”, probably made around 1822.
