Life

The father, Albert Vierthaler, was a Anhalt pastor, the mother Helene Holzmann comes from a Anhalt pastor family.
The Vierthalers were an old Koethen family, whose members often appeared in the Koethen administration. Vierthaler was a Primaner at the Francisceum in Zerbst from 1902 to 1904. He studied law and before he was permanently employed on April 1, 1920 as a "councilor" at the Anhalt Finance Directorate in Dessau, he worked as a court and consistory assessor in Magdeburg. (Official Gazette for Anhalt dated April 2, 1920, No. 27, p. 106) In his new office he took over the chairmanship of the district assessment commission for the cities of Zerbst and Bernburg as well as for the districts of the city of Dessau (E 138, No. 17, personnel file Officials of the Anhalt higher authorities). On October 1, 1924, at his request, he was transferred to the Dessau Regional Court and appointed "Regional Court Councilor". (Official Gazette for Anhalt of October 3rd, 1924, No. 78, p. 161) In 1940 he took over the administration of the von Bergen Family Foundation. (Z 223, no. 27-29)
As a district judge, most recently as district court director, he spent his professional life at the Dessau district court. In 1949 he was given early retirement.
In the following years he was very involved in the life of the Anhalt Church. He was a member of the Anhalt regional synod, chairman of the ecclesiastical disciplinary chamber, deputy chairman of the regional church court and worked for many years as an honorary regional church archivist. At times he was a legal advisor in the LKR and oversaw the legislative work of the Anhalt Church. During a vacancy, he worked for a short time as the legal department of the LKR. His main occupation was the alphabetical mapping of Anhalt church registers. This is how the Vierthaler card index named after him was created. This card index is well known to genealogists all over the world. The card index comprises approx. 70,000 to 100,000 index cards / index cards in 61 index boxes. About a third of the Anhalt church registers are recorded in it.
In 1963 Ernst Vierthaler moved with his wife to live with their daughter in Berlin. The card index was continued by the pastor couple Fredenhagen and after the death of their husband by Mrs. Fredenhagen alone.
In 1994 the card index was handed over to the regional church archive, where it is still located today.
