Ludwig Rüger

Ludwig Rüger (born August 10, 1896 in Wittuna near Pilsen , † May 15, 1955 in Heidelberg ) was a German paleontologist and geologist.

Rüger had lived in Germany since he was ten and spoke a little Czech. Rüger was the son of a mining engineer, graduated from secondary school in Heidelberg in 1914 and then was a soldier in World War I , most recently as a military geologist. From 1918 he studied geology in Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1921 and habilitation in Heidelberg in 1923. Then he was there assistant to Wilhelm Salomon-Calvi and from 1929 associate professor. In 1934 he became associate professor in Jena and in 1944 full professor in Strasbourg and acting head of the Geological Institute. In 1945 he was "evacuated" from Jena by the Americans against his will. From 1946 he was professor of geology and paleontology in Heidelberg.

In 1920 he became a member of the German Geological Society and in 1947 a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . The Bavarian Academy of Sciences , he belonged to as a corresponding member. He had been married to Pauline Haas, a doctor of paleontology, from 1923, with whom he also published.
