Brzeźnica is a village in the powiat Wadowicki of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the rural community of the same name with around 10,200 inhabitants.

geography

The place is located on the southern bank of the Vistula , at the mouth of the Brodawka or Brzeźnica brook . The neighboring places are Kołoczyn in the north, Czernichów in the northeast, Brzezinka in the east, Marcyporęba in the south, Nowe Dwory in the west and Chrząstowice in the northwest.

history

The area was probably settled by the Radwanici family in the early 13th century. The area between the rivers Skawa in the west and Skawinka in the east was separated from Lesser Poland in 1274 and attached to the Duchy of Opole . The place was first mentioned in 1377 as Brzeznicz [e] . Politically, the village then belonged to the Duchy of Auschwitz , which existed from 1315 during the period of Polish particularism . Since 1327 consisted suzerainty of the Kingdom of Bohemia . Since 1445 it belonged to the Duchy of Zator , which was sold to Poland in 1494.

The Dukes of Auschwitz opened a customs chamber in the village, donated by Duke Wenceslaus to Pakosz von Brzeźnica in 1440 .

When Poland was first partitioned , Brzeźnica became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Brzeźnica came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the General Government .

After the Second World War, the village became quite industrialized.

From 1975 to 1998 Brzeźnica was part of the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
