The Skawa (German look ) is a right tributary of the Vistula in Poland .

It rises near the village of Spytkowice , 12 km west of the town of Rabka-Zdrój , at an altitude of around 700 m, under the Bory Pass (709 m) in the Saybuscher Beskids . The Skawa initially runs to the east, but turns its course to the northwest, where it flows through the cities of Jordanów (on the 27 km of the course), Maków Podhalański and Sucha Beskidzka and the Saybuscher Beskids in the south from the Beskid Makowski (Central Beskids) in the north separates. In Sucha (54 km from the springs) the river bends north and cuts through the eastern edge of the Little Beskids . In Wadowice (75 km) it enters the Pogórze Wielickie . In its lower reaches, it flows north past the city of Zator (4 km before the mouth). After 96.4 km it flows into the Vistula near the village of Smolice above Zator .

The main tributaries are: Bystrzanka, Skawica, Grzechynka, Stryszawka, Tarnawka and Wieprzówka (left), and Malejówka, Żarnowianka, Paleczka and Stryszówka (right). The catchment area has an area of 1160 km² and is located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship with the exception of Las .

The river was mentioned in a document in 1274 as fluvio Scaua (see Radwanitenkorridor ) and is derived from the ancient Slavic word * sҌkati (to turn). In 1445 it became the axis of the new Duchy of Zator . During the Second World War, the middle course of the Skawa (then Schaue ) between Woźniki and Sucha became the border between the Third Reich and the Generalgouvernement .

In 2017 the first reservoir in Świnna Poręba was flooded.
