Rabka-Zdrój ( German Bad Rabka ) is a spa town in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland . It is located about 50 km south of Krakow and has a population of around 13,000.

Rabka-Zdrój is best known as the largest children's health resort in Poland, because it has a very healthy microclimate (half of the area of Rabka is forested) and lots of sun (around 2100 hours per year).

geography

Rabka is located on the northern slope of the Gorce in the Rabka Basin , at the confluence of the Poniczanka, Słonka and Skomielnianka rivers with the Raba river .

history

In this place in the Raba valley, salt has been extracted from the Rabka springs since the 13th century. The healing properties of the water were initially only known to the local population, a water analysis was only carried out in 1858 (high in iodine and bromine), which also led to the development of a health resort . Rabka, formerly famous for its salt works, was known as a health resort as early as 1864. The first children's hospital came into being a few years later. The local brine is used in the sanatoriums and health clinics. Rabka gained international recognition in the 19th century due to its specific climate and medicinal mineral waters.

The health resort specializes in the treatment of circulatory, respiratory and metabolic diseases as well as allergies. In 1952 Rabka-Zdrój received town charter , and since 1962 there has also been a pediatric center here. The state puppet theater Rabka is also well-known , which is highly regarded not only in Poland but also in German-speaking countries.

local community

The town-and-country community ( gmina miejsko-wiejska ) includes the town of Rabka-Zdrój, the districts of Chabówka , Ponice and Rdzawka, each with a school administration office .

Culture and sights

Sights include several villas from the 19th century (Villa Kazimierz, Villa Engel) the wooden church of St. Maria Magdalena. The building with a tower from 1744, erected in 1608 in the Goralen style, was decorated in the interior in the second half of the 18th century in the Baroque style. The walls and vaults have been covered with late baroque paintings since 1802. In 1974/75 the building, which had not been used as a place of worship since 1908, was renovated. It has housed the Władysław Hurricane Museum of Folk Art since 1936, the oldest exhibits date from the 16th century.

Also worth seeing are the Rabcio puppet theater, the Sniezka cinema, the open-air railway museum in Chabowka near Rabka, the winter carnival, the Carpathian Festival of regional children's ensembles and the International Festival of Mountain Children. Many entertainment and folklore events are also organized during the summer.

There is a modern sports stadium, numerous ski lifts (Polczakowka, Maciejowa-ski), many tennis facilities, a lunapark, a road town for children with bike rental, an ice rink, a toboggan run.

Rabka-Zdrój is a good starting point for sporting activities in the mountains (hiking, cross-country skiing) and trips to the nearby Górczański Park Narodowy . An extensive network of hiking trails stretches from the spa park: on the Luboń Wielki ( 1022  m npm ) and on the Turbacz ( 1310  m ), Stare Wierchy, Krzywon and Bania mountains .
