The Chabówka – Nowy Sącz railway is a railway connection in Poland . It runs in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship from Chabówka via Rabka-Zdrój and Limanowa to Nowy Sącz .

history

The line is part of the Galician Transversal Railway built by the Austrian state for strategic reasons . It was opened on December 16, 1884. Right at the beginning of the First World War in November and December 1914, the railway fulfilled important logistical tasks in the course of the battle of Limanowa-Lapanow .

During the Second World War , most of the bridges and the stations in Chabówka, Rabka-Zaryte, Tymbark and Limanowa were destroyed.

The Marcinkowice – Nowy Sącz section was electrified for freight traffic in the 1980s. The electric railway operation was opened there on May 28, 1986. On June 11, 1993, the short section Chabówka – Rabka Zdrój followed.

Travel between Rabka Zdrój and Nowy Sącz ceased on March 22, 2004. As far as Rabka Zdrój, the route is still served by trains between Kraków and Zakopane .

Tourist train with OKz32-2 in Rabka-Zaryte (2015)

Due to the existence of the Museum of Vehicles and Railway Technology in Chabówka and the scenic location of the route in the Beskids , tourist traffic with steam locomotives between Chabówka and Kasina Wielka is carried out, especially on the summer weekends.

In the medium term, in connection with the construction of the new Podłęże – Piekiełko line, renovation and electrification of the entire line is planned. The main axis of the new construction road is to flow into Tymbark, a connecting curve in Mszana Dolna. The travel time of the passenger trains on the Kraków – Zakopane route is to be reduced from the current four hours to 90 minutes after the project is completed in 2024; Muszyna / Plaveč advised.

Route description

The route runs in a west-east direction through the Beskid Wyspowy (German Inselbeskiden ). It begins in Chabówka and follows the Raba river to Mszana Dolna. The railway then climbs steeply to the highest point of the route at Skrzydlna (608 m) and then descends at Dobra to meet the valley of the Łososina River, which it follows to Łososina Górna. In addition, the route runs to Limanowa, the Sowlina valley. After Limanowa the route overcomes another vertex at Pisarzowa. As far as Marcinkowice, the route follows the Smolnik valley to reach the Dunajec valley near Marcinkowice , which it follows to Nowy Sącz. Between Nowy Sącz Chełmiec and Nowy Sącz the Dunajec is crossed with a multi-span steel truss bridge.

Vehicle use

kkStB 54.37, procured for the Galician Transversal Railway

At the beginning Austrian machines of the steam locomotive series kkStB 54 were in use. Due to the steep incline to the apex at Kasina Wielka, the trains were supported by additional locomotives. At the beginning of the uphill sections in Mszana Dolna and Dobra there was a turntable, because the locomotives had to drive chamber ahead. There was a small locomotive depot in Dobra. In the 1950s, these operating points in Mszana Dolna and Dobra became unnecessary due to the use of more powerful machines.

Until 1939 the trains were pulled almost exclusively by Austrian steam locomotives. After 1945 the series Ty2 dominated , which was to be found in regular use on the line until 1991. For shunting tasks in Limanowa and Tymbark as well as light freight trains, machines of the PKP series Tr203 from the Nowy Sącz depot were available until the 1970s . From the end of regular steam operation in 1991, mainly diesel locomotives of the SP42 series dominated everyday operations. After the turn of the millennium, the SA104 diesel multiple unit was in service for a short time.

The Chabówka Museum uses steam locomotives of the OKz32 , OL12 , Tkt48 , Ty2 and Ty42 series in front of the tourist trains.
