Ludwig Johann Schleiermacher (born May 28, 1785 in Darmstadt ; † February 13, 1844 there ) was a German physicist and senior construction director.

Life

Ludwig Johann Schleiermacher was born in Darmstadt in May 1785 as the eldest son of Ernst Schleiermacher and his wife Henriette von Hesse (brother: Andreas Schleiermacher ). His father had been cabinet secretary at the court of the Darmstadt Grand Duke since December 1779. In this function he played a key role in building up the art and natural objects collections in Darmstadt.

Ludwig Schleiermacher was the godson of Ludwig I (Hessen-Darmstadt) . He attended the Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium in Darmstadt and then studied natural science and law at the University of Giessen . Equipped with a scholarship from his godfather, he was able to visit the universities in Göttingen and Paris for another two years. From 1806 to 1823 Ludwig Schleiermacher was a teacher of mathematics and physics at the pedagogue, the old-language grammar school in Darmstadt. In 1808 he was appointed head of the Grand Duke's physical cabinet. This was an extensive collection of physical devices that Ludwig I had amassed since 1778. Schleiermacher, whose special love was optics, systematically built up the Physikalisches Kabinett. He built numerous models and devices himself.

With his popular science lectures for the interested public, which he gave from 1808 to 1837, he has earned a high reputation in his hometown.

Schleiermacher carried out the first Hessian base measurement from Darmstadt to Griesheim in October 1808 together with his friend, Councilor Christian Eckhardt (Geodät) , the "father of Hessian geodesy". This survey became the basis of the topographic maps in Hessen. Schleiermacher is therefore, along with Eckhardt, the "father of Hessian basic surveying".

This was followed by the appointment to the court chamber councilor. In 1832 he became a secret senior building officer. In 1835 he followed his father in the management of the museum of Grand Duke Ludwig II (Hessen-Darmstadt) . He held this office until his death in 1844.

Since 1838 was director of the senior building management. Ludwig Johann Schleiermacher is one of the co-initiators of the higher commercial school in Darmstadt, a predecessor of the later TH Darmstadt .

Ludwig Schleiermacher died in February 1844 as a result of pneumonia in his hometown. He was married to Wilhelmine Magarethe Lichthammer (1790–1813) since 1812 and Caroline Christiane Mauerer (1796–1882) from 1814. The marriage resulted in two daughters and the son Heinrich August Schleiermacher .
