Ludwig Voltz (librarian)

Ludwig Voltz (born September 7, 1863 in Bessungen , † October 21, 1931 in Darmstadt ) was a German librarian .

Life

Voltz attended grammar school in Darmstadt and then studied ancient philology and German at the universities in Bonn and Strasbourg . He then became an assistant at the Philological Seminary in Strasbourg, where he also received his doctorate. After a brief activity in teaching in Alsace and Hesse, he went to the State Library in Darmstadt in 1891 . There he became senior librarian in 1904 and in 1924, at the age of almost 61, he succeeded Adolf Schmidt as director. He held this office until his retirement in 1929.

Voltz was interested in both ancient and Byzantine philology as well as Hessian history and bibliography. He was also a member of the Historisches Verein von Hessen, founded in 1832, and published numerous academic papers on local history. He was also a music connoisseur and member of the board of the Darmstadt Music Association, founded in 1832. Other board members at the beginning of the 20th century included a. Otto Wolfskehl , Georg Wickop . On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, he published a complete compilation of the concerts of the Musikverein.

Ludwig Voltz died in Darmstadt in October 1931 at the age of 68.
