Ludwig von Gemmingen-Hornberg (* 1901 in Mannheim ; † October 10, 1978 in Lautersheim ) was the owner of Woffenbach Castle and, as the second mayor of Woffenbach, took a large part in the development of the place through extensive land grants. He was made an honorary citizen of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , where Woffenbach was incorporated in 1972. In addition, the Freiherr-von-Gemmingen-Platz in Woffenbach is named after him and a bust of him is placed in front of the former castle.

Life

He was the son of the administrative lawyer Karl von Gemmingen-Hornberg (1857-1935) and Hedwig Scipio (1867-1935). He lived with his parents in Strasbourg from 1903 and in Metz from 1912 . When the First World War broke out , he returned to Mannheim. Since 1921 he was a member of the Corps Bremensia Göttingen . With funds from the inheritance of his father, who died in 1935, he was able to fulfill his wish for his own farm by purchasing the castle in Woffenbach. The 14-room castle included 27 hectares of land. He moved into the castle property in 1937. After the Second World War , the castle was inhabited by up to five families. Ludwig von Gemmingen and his family moved into the neighboring building in 1950 and leased the castle to the Bavarian Red Cross , which set up a retirement and nursing home in it, which Ludwig supplied with products from his agriculture and gardening. In 1955 the BRK acquired the castle while Ludwig von Gemmingen gave up farming. The farm buildings came to the local riding club, where daughter Christa was a riding instructor.

He was the second mayor of Woffenbach from 1956 to 1964 and during this time he had a significant influence on the development of the community by letting the community have a large number of properties cheaply, including those for the district building yard, the city gardening department and the local cemetery. In 1964 he finally sold the rest of the Woffenbach property and moved to Lautersheim. However, he remained connected to Woffenbach beyond the incorporation to Neumarkt in 1972 and was made an honorary citizen of Neumarkt. He died in Lautersheim in 1978 and was buried in Woffenbach.
