The statue erected by Michael Wagmüller in 1882 was erected with a state grant in an effort to preserve the memory of the emperor from the House of Wittelsbach . The city sponsor was the founder of the Heilig-Geist-Spital .
The fountain was originally located on the Rathausplatz, but was then moved to the Paradeplatz . Every year it is used as an Easter fountain .
