Michael Wagmüller
Michael Wagmüller (born April 14, 1839 in Regensburg , † December 26, 1881 in Munich ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Michael Wagmüller attended the trade school in Munich , learned the beginnings of art for a year from the sculptor Anselm Sickinger (1807–1873) and entered the academy in 1854 as a student of Professor Max von Widnmann . In 1860 he began to work independently, but initially had little success and for a while switched to portrait painting due to a lack of employment in sculpture, until he received the order for two busts and two allegorical female figures for a Munich school building. From 1868 to 1873 he traveled regularly to London , where he made a good dozen portrait busts of English aristocrats. He exhibited his models regularly in Munich and was noticed by the art-loving King Ludwig II , who commissioned him with a bronze statue of Louis XIV of France , the Sun King . In 1869, together with Reinhold Begas and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, he was awarded a Gold Medal of Honor for the works he presented in the Munich Glass Palace , and in 1872 he was appointed honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts and Professor together with Friedrich Drake , Reinhold Begas and Caspar Zumbusch . In 1873 Wagmüller was one of the founding members of the Munich artists' association Allotria , of which he was chairman between 1874 and 1879. In 1876 he presented the tomb for his two daughters, who died in infancy, at the Paris World Exhibition , which was much praised and which would later become his own.
The last few years have been filled almost exclusively with work for King Ludwig II. Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee palaces . Justus von Liebig's seated image intended for Maximiliansplatz in Munich was started by him, but completed by his pupil Wilhelm von Rümann after his death .
