The Ludwigsschanzen (also Ludwigschanzen ) are two earth jumps built in 1693 on the Schweinsberg in Heilbronn . They are named after the Türkenlouis , Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden , who stayed in the Palatinate War of Succession as commander-in-chief of the imperial troops near Heilbronn and had the entrenchments laid out as unequipped artillery positions to better protect the imperial city of Heilbronn.

The remains of the two star-shaped earth entrenchments, each about 50 m long and with a ditch in front, are about 300 m apart on the edge of the forest above the vineyards that stretch up the Schweinsberg. Ludwigsschanze I is located in Gewann Kohlpfad , Ludwigsschanze II in Gewann Hölle , a few hundred meters west of the Schweinsbergsiedlung that existed from 1945 to 1971 .

A few meters west of Ludwigsschanze I and directly above the vineyards, the Heilbronn Beautification Association had a little observation tower built in 1900, which offered a wide view of Heilbronn and the Neckar Valley and was called the Ludwigstürmchen . After this little tower burned down on October 12, 1926, it was replaced in 1927 by a stone viewing hut ⊙ , which was opened to the public on March 24, 1928.
