Götzens Church in March 2010

The Roman Catholic parish church Götzens is located in the municipality of Götzens in the Innsbruck-Land district in Tyrol . The parish church of Peter and Paul is part of the Axams deanery in the Innsbruck diocese . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

The residents of Götzens parish originally had to go to church in Axams because their mother parish was there. The first church under the patronage of Saints Peter and Paul, mentioned in a document in 1350, has been preserved as the Theresienkirche on the outskirts of Birgitz . The successor church was built in the 15th or 16th century on the site of today's Josefsheim, where remains of the surrounding wall of the churchyard have been preserved. Today's parish church was built in the center of the village at a square-shaped main intersection by the local stonemason and master builder Franz Singer from 1772 to 1775. The consecration took place in 1780 with the finished five altars. The church was elevated to a parish church in 1786. From 1932 the pastor Otto Neururer worked in the church , who was arrested in 1938, then taken to the Dachau concentration camp and finally murdered in the Buchenwald concentration camp .

Due to the shortage of priests , the parishes of Axams , Birgitz , Götzens and Grinzens were merged into the pastoral care area of the western low mountain range in 2009 .

architecture

The church is considered to be one of the most beautiful Rococo village churches in the southern German-speaking area. The gradual moving in sequence of the three flat dome rooms, two as a nave, one as a choir, can be clearly seen inside and outside on the long sides. The sacristy annex connects behind the flat and closed choir, drawn in on the same axis. The rhythmic arrangement of two arched windows and the skylight windows placed above them is remarkable. The strong, profiled cornice surrounding the gable roof was pulled through on the north facade as a belt cornice below the curved gable and bent upwards to emphasize the center with two end pieces. The corrugated gable on two round columns of the arched portal forms the three-dimensional structure of the otherwise smooth unified front with the cornice. This is based on the model of the Wilten basilica with an architectural painting with pilasters and a comprehensive framing of the windows and rich decor. Above the portal is a large arched window between two arched niches with the Rococo statues of the church patrons Peter and Paul. On the upper cornice stands the figure of Maria Immaculata between two vases and two figures of female saints to the side. All sculptures come from the sculptor Johann Schnegg. The gable fresco with an allegory of the victorious church was painted by Matthäus Günther in 1775 . The west tower, tied back a little to the right of the gable facade, has narrow slits of light on the lower floors. The bell storey is set off with a belt cornice. Above it is an octagonal closure with an onion helmet with the year FS 1775 PM for master builder Franz Singer and master carpenter Peter Mayr, and an attached octagonal lantern with another, small onion helmet.

After the front yoke with a gallery, there are two arched yokes with transverse oval flat domes . After a rounded segment yoke or triumphal arch , characteristic of Franz Singer, the square choir with flat dome and flat rounded altar niche follows. Characteristic for Singer is the wandering of the room boundaries with rounded, strongly protruding wall pillars and with the occupation by finely layered pilasters and a layering in the surrounding entablature. A bend in the middle and a three-part, semicircular bezel are based on the architect's inspiration for the Jakobskirche in Innsbruck .

The interior of the church is a prime example of Baroque theater architecture , where the effect of depth is enhanced by the staggered narrowing of the individual parts of the room, analogous to stage sets. So the view of the visitor entering the main portal can be seen all five altars at the same time. Walls and vaults are of sparkling, golden contoured Rocaille - stucco work on plays in documents created by Franz Singer 1775th The dome frescos were created by Matthäus Günther in 1775: in the nave the life and legend of the church patron, in the first yoke the fall of the magician Simon . The Capitol in Rome is shown in the peripheral architecture. The two princes of the apostles stand on a platform and, as the counterpart of spiritual and secular power, on a balustrade sock, Emperor Nero .

Furnishing

The figures of the altars and the larger-than-life crucifix were made by Johann Schnegg, the altars were straightened according to his designs. The altarpiece teaching, arguing and triumphant church over Peter and Paul on the high altar was created in 1775/76 by the workshop of Franz Anton Maulpertsch . In 1977 a new memorial to the pastor of the martyrs Otto Neururer was erected on the left under the gallery.
