Ludwik Szperl

Ludwik Szperl (born June 21, 1879 in Kielce , † April 29, 1944 in Warsaw ) was a Polish chemist ( organic chemistry ).

Szperl studied from 1897 at the University of Warsaw with the candidate degree in 1901, was an assistant at the university and studied from 1904 at the ETH Zurich . From 1909 to 1911 he taught organic chemistry and analytical chemistry at the University of Warsaw and he taught at a high school and at the agricultural school. In 1911 he received his master's degree and in 1915 he became a lecturer at the Polytechnic ( Technical University of Warsaw ), where he became associate professor in 1919 and full professor in 1920 and in 1926 professor of organic chemistry. He was dean of the chemistry faculty several times (first in 1917) and from 1926 to 1928 he was rector of the Technical University of Warsaw. He also taught at the University of Warsaw. During World War II he was at the underground university.

He mainly dealt with the synthesis of organic compounds containing sulfur (especially thiophene and its derivatives) and later those containing selenium.
