The Federal Ministry of the Interior has by decree after the Elbe floods cooperation by the service, the federal police with the water rescue from different organizations (water rescue, DLRG, firefighters features). Through regular training in cooperation with the individual squadrons of the Federal Police, a set number of helpers is specially trained to be able to assist with B. to be used primarily for rescuing people in flood situations and in disaster control. There are different scenarios for how the emergency services can be deployed. Various procedures are carried out for rescue from running waters. In addition, it is also planned to deploy forces on buildings enclosed by the water in order to rescue people or to look after and care for medical services. Due to lead and standby times, this is not a matter of quick immediate measures such as B. drowning accidents.

The terms air rescuer and air rescue unit are misleading, as they are covered with different content in German air rescue, but they are increasingly used especially in the Bavarian water rescue service.

Since the end of 2005, air rescue units have also been trained at the German Life Rescue Society (DLRG) .
