Luigi Groto

Luigi Groto (born September 7, 1541 in Adria (Veneto) , † December 13, 1585 in Venice ) was a blind Italian poet.

Groto, called il Cieco d'Adria ( the blind man of Adria ), lost sight eight days after his birth , but nevertheless pursued philosophical and literary studies with such success that he was able to appear as a public speaker at the age of 15.

In 1565 he was appointed president of the newly founded Akademie der Illustrati zu Adria; he died on December 13, 1585 in Venice, after he had played the role of the blind king Oedipus in the theater there shortly before .
