The Savoia Peak , also known as Mount Savoia and Savoia peak is with 1415 meters the highest mountain on the Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It rises about 5 km southeast of the disused British research station at Port Lockroy and forms the northeast end of the Sierra DuFief . Most of it is heavily glaciated, but the northwest side is dominated by steep rock faces.
Participants in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) led by the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery discovered it in 1898. The first ascent took place during the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903–1905) led by the polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . Charcot named the mountain after the Italian explorer Luigi Amadeo of Savoy .
