In this weight class, he boxed in his first fight against the Mexican Genaro Garcia for the vacant IBF World Championship and won by TKo in the 7th round. However, he lost this title in his first title defense at the end of September of the same year against Joseph Agbeko by giving up in round 7.

The following year he failed against Ricardo Córdoba unanimously on points when it came to the interim world championship in super bantamweight.
