Queen Luisa

Luisa von Gusmão (in Spanish : Luisa de Guzmán) (* 1613 in Sanlúcar de Barrameda; † November 6, 1666 in Lisbon ) was a Spanish noblewoman and from 1640 to 1656 Queen of Portugal (as a wife, not as a ruler under her own right).

She was born the daughter of the Spanish nobleman Johann Manuel Pérez de Guzmán , eighth Duke of Medina Sidonia and Johana Lourença Gómez de Sandoval y la Cerda . In 1633 she married John II , the eighth Duke of Braganza . He ascended the Portuguese throne in 1640 after a rebellion had ended the Spanish rule in Portugal (see Philip III of Portugal, personal union of Portugal with Spain ), and Luisa became queen of Portugal.

She was the mother of seven children, including the Portuguese kings Alfonso VI. and Peter II and Catherine Henrietta , Queen of England (the wife of Charles II )
