The Luise-von-Duesberg-Gymnasium (LvD) is a high school in the Lower Rhine city of Kempen .

history

The grammar school was founded in Kempen in 1867 as a secondary school for girls. At the beginning, the class took place in the house at Engerstraße 53 in the middle of the old town. In 1869 the grammar school founded by the Ursuline Congregation of Calvarienberg in Ahrweiler moved to the monastery on Mülhauser Straße. In 1875 the school was closed. In 1892 the cooperative of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mulhouse near Grefrath established the new company. State recognition took place in 1909. In 1938 the private school was closed and converted into a state school. In addition, the name changed from a high school for girls to a municipal high school. The first Abitur examination took place on March 12, 1938. In November 1944 the school was closed for one year and the school moved into a new building, in which classes were resumed on October 15, 1945. In 1966, the now municipal new language girls' grammar school moved to its current location, Berliner Allee 42. The existing building was enlarged by an extension in 1977 before the school got its current name in 1980.

Namesake

The school is named after Luise (formerly Louise) Caroline Sophie Johanna von Duesberg (born September 10, 1833 in Berlin ). She was the seventh child of Gerhard Franz Xaver Duesberg from Borken, who was promoted to the nobility in 1840 . Luise was accepted into the Ursuline Congregation of Calvarienberg near Ahrweiler as sister Mater Hilaria on August 28, 1856 . She was a teacher for elementary and higher education and from 1860 to the beginning of 1867 head of the novitiate. The congregation of the order established a branch in Kempen to set up a secondary school for girls. Luise was entrusted with the management of the school and the branch office after a qualification test as headmistress. She held both offices from 1867 to 1869 and from 1873 to 1875.

Under Luise's direction, the nuns taught not only in the secondary school for daughters, but also in the evening school they set up and in the state elementary school, thereby fulfilling the mission of the founder of the order Angela von Merici with regard to the education of girls and help for socially disadvantaged children and young people. After many years as superior (also in another monastery in Belgium) Luise von Duesberg lived in the Ursuline monastery in Boppard and died there on December 19, 1904.

School today

Cultural interests of the students (cultural splinters / choirs / big bands / art project courses) as well as mathematical and scientific activities are particularly encouraged.
