Luise Kurtz (born August 3, 1848 in Heidesheim ; † December 31, 1930 ) was a German painter .

Life

Luise Kurtz was born as Louise Auguste Viktoria Krebs on August 3, 1848 at Gut Oelmühle in Heidesheim near Ingelheim . In 1869 she married the winery owner Rudolph Kurtz (1841 – ca. 1913) from Osthofen .

Kurtz was one of the first women in Germany to complete professional training as a painter. From 1887 to 1889 she studied at the Karlsruhe School of Painting under Edmund Kanoldt . In 1892 she trained at the Grand Ducal Baden Art Academy in Karlsruhe with Friedrich Kallmorgen , and from 1893 to 1894 she received training with Peter Paul Müller in Munich. During this time she became a member of the General German Art Cooperative and the Karlsruhe Association of Women Painters. From 1907 to 1908 she was a member of the Worms women's voting association.

Luise Kurtz mainly painted landscapes, but also numerous still lifes . She was taught landscape painting by Edmund Kanoldt in Karlsruhe and initially painted with a late romantic expression, but under the influence of Peter Paul Müller in Munich in the style of late impressionism. At that time, Luise Kurtz was extremely independent and idiosyncratic, as she not only carried out her expensive training with artists, but also made a living after the death of her husband by painting and running her husband's winery in Osthofen (Rheinhessen). With the inflation of 1922 , however, she lost her fortune and was dependent on support from relatives from East Prussia. She traded numerous paintings in exchange for everyday necessities. In 1930 the Osthofen impressionist died lonely and misunderstood. The estate was scattered and only fragments have been preserved. In February 2018, the Kulturnetzwerk Osthofen eV organized an exhibition with around 40 works by Luise Kurtz in the rooms of the Kunstverein Worms to draw attention to the painter and her work. After her death on December 31, 1930, she was buried in the Osthofen mountain cemetery. The review of the estate is ongoing.
