Edmund Friedrich Kanoldt (born March 13, 1845 in Großrudestedt near Weimar , † June 27, 1904 in Bad Nauheim ) was a German painter .

Life

Kanoldt was a student of Friedrich Preller in Weimar for four and a half years and went to Rome in 1869, where he devoted himself to the stylized heroic landscape under Dreber's influence. In the footsteps of his teacher, he visited Olevano Romano , where his pencil drawing La Serpentara di Olevano was made. He stayed there until 1872, but returned to Italy in 1874 to make drawings for Engelhorn's magnificent work about Italy. When Kanoldt found out that the Serpentara , an oak grove near Olevano Romano, was going to be cut down, he initiated a fundraising campaign to buy the grove for the benefit of the German Empire and the German Emperor.

He later took up residence in Karlsruhe, where he continued his colouristic training based on Ferdinand Keller , who occasionally decorated his landscapes with figures.

His works are characterized by atmospheric, poetically composed and rich, juicy coloring.

For a private house in Leipzig he painted the story of Amor and Psyche in eight pictures, and with Philip Grot Johann he illustrated Eichendorff'sFrom the life of a good-for-nothing ”. He was a grand-ducal Saxon professor.

The painter Alexander Kanoldt (1881–1939) is Edmund Kanoldt's son.
