Economy and Infrastructure

This is where the greatest successes in reducing poverty since 1998 have been achieved. The most important economic product of this district is fish from the Zambezi. The wide floodplains of the Zambezi consist of sand, but are fertile. The Santa Maria Mission's Deep Sand ferry crosses the Zambezi near Lukulu . In 2003 mining rights for diamonds were granted.

Lukulu has a hospital, elementary and secondary schools, a gas station and a few shops. There is an unpaved, 1200 meter long runway. The 195 kilometer long dirt road to Katunda was renewed in 2001. A supplier route takes the road or the Benguela Railway from Luanda to Cangimbe on the Lungwebungu River and continues the transport by boat to Lukulu and Mongu , which depends largely on the water level.
