history

In 1980 the film and cinema initiative Göttingen was founded with 80 members initially with the aim of establishing a municipal cinema in Göttingen. But it was only after years of searching for a space that the cinema at the Geismarlandstrasse location could be put into operation. One of the association's founders, Wilfried Arnold, then ran the company as managing director.

Other well-known employees of the Lumières include the sociologist and philosopher Elisabeth Quast, born in 1949, and the film director and film critic Dieter Geißler, born in 1939 .

European Film Festival Göttingen

Also in 1980 the Verein Film- und Kinoinitiative Göttingen eV established the Göttingen European Film Festival, which has been held annually since then, initially under the name of "Landesfilmtage". The focus is on the filmmaking of a previously selected country in Europe . The program regularly includes a photo exhibition and, if necessary, changing additional events. European premieres , “Young German Cinema” and short film programs under the heading “Europe in Shorts” are regularly on the program.

For the European Film Festival sponsored by nordmedia - Film- und Mediengesellschaft Niedersachsen / Bremen , which will take place from November 24th to December 3rd, 2017 on 3 screens in the Lumière cinema, in the Alfred Hessel Hall in the Old University Library and in the “Clubkino im ZHG "Was announced, around 40 premieres in the genres of feature films , documentaries and short films with a focus on Italy were planned. Festival director Helge Schweckendiek expected around 3500 visitors who could vote for the film for the Göttinger Liesel Audience Award .
