The Luxembourg Red Cross ( Luxembourgish Rout-Kräiz vu Lëtzebuerg , French Croix-Rouge Luxembourgeoise ) is the Luxembourg- based national organization as the national representative of the International Red Cross . The association, founded in 1914 and based on Stater Park , Luxembourg's city park, has almost 2000 members.

story

The beginnings go back to Grand Duchess Adelheid Marie , who appealed to her compatriots shortly after the outbreak of the First World War on August 6, 1914. She asked them to show their generosity and to create the aid organization provided for in Article 11 of the Geneva Convention , which was ratified in 1907 by the Luxembourg MEPs. The steel baron Emil Mayrisch , who came from a doctor's household, took the initiative together with his wife Aline Mayrisch de Saint-Hubert and called the founding meeting only two days later. The Grand Duchess took over the patronage.

In addition to legal and moral support, the Mayrisch couple also brought their residence in Dudelange , now known as the Arbed Casino , into the corporation as a war hospital. Right from the start, the Red Cross in Luxembourg was highly regarded in civil society, with leading representatives of important bodies among its founding members, such as the chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, the President of the Council of State, the Mayor of Luxembourg City and the Commander-in-Chief of the Army as well as the church representatives. The International Red Cross recognized this organization in October of the same year.

After the war, the Luxembourg Red Cross expanded its activities to include civil aid. In the early years, this mainly included the fight against social injustice, which was devoted to the provision of sanitary, hygiene and disease prevention, for example. In 1923 non-profit status (granting civil personality) was recognized. In 1933 the organization narrowly escaped bankruptcy due to a lack of support, the aftermath of the global economic crisis and mismanagement. There was hostility from the population. During the Second World War, the Luxembourg Red Cross mainly organized the evacuation of the Luxembourg population from Montpellier , with the support of the High Commissioner for Refugees in France. The American Red Cross was financially involved in this activity during this time.

After the Second World War, a new beginning began, as with other state and private organizations that had worked closely with German national forces. As with the Police Grand-Ducale , for example , the name was changed from the original German name to the French language .

Since then, the Luxembourg Red Cross has professionalized and specialized. 40 services are offered that can be carried out in cooperation with the state, but still largely depend on the commitment of their volunteers and the willingness of the population to donate. It operates internationally.
