Luzzasco Luzzaschi (* 1545 in Ferrara ; † September 11, 1607 in Ferrara) was an Italian composer and organist .

Life

In his youth, Luzzaschi was a pupil of the Flemish composer Cipriano de Rore and entered service for the first time in May 1561 at the court of Duke Alfonso II. D'Este . In 1564 he became the ducal court organist, and from 1572 he also held the position of organist at Ferrares Cathedral. In 1574 he rose, as the successor to Afonso della Viola (also called dalla Viola ), to head the instrumental music of the Duke of Ferrara. After the death of Alfonso II. In 1597, the inclusion of Ferrara in the Papal States and the relocation of the ducal family of Mantua , Luzzaschi remained until his death in Ferrara. It has not been proven whether Luzzaschi held the title of Kapellmeister . Luzzaschi also worked as a teacher, Girolamo Frescobaldi is his most famous student.

Luzzaschi is known today mainly for his madrigals . Here, like his teacher de Rore, he placed particular emphasis on text-oriented composition, i.e. the choice of musical stylistic devices in direct relation to the sung text.

Heavily ornamented voices, simpler written out accompanying part in the madrigal O dolcezz'amarissime d'Amore

In addition to the seven books of madrigals with the usual scoring of five voices, which were written between 1571 and 1604 and printed in Venice and Ferrara, the collection of madrigals for one to three sopranos (printed in Rome in 1601) is particularly outstanding. In this work, composed for the famous Concerto delle donne ensemble , the virtuosity that is required of the singers is particularly striking. The large proportion of written out decorations above an undecorated bass line already indicates the new style of monody , which is playing the leading role in the upcoming opera . Another special feature of this madrigal collection is the accompanying part for a keyboard instrument written out above the bass part . This can be seen as a transition between the overlapping accompaniment styles, the colla parte playing on the one hand and harmonizing a bass line with the right hand ( basso continuo ) on the other, and thus one of the earliest sources for the emergence of the new figured bass practice around 1600.
