history
Before the settlement by European immigrants, a small number of Aborigines lived in the area.
European explorers arrived in the area in December 1837. On December 13, 1837, their leader Colonel William Light noted that they had reached a beautiful valley, which he named Lynedoch Vale after his friend Lord Lynedoch . Colonel Light sold from 1839 as Surveyor General on behalf of South Australia land around the present day Lyndoch. In the early 1840s, Edward Rowland acquired a piece of land now known as the Rowland Flat.
Lyndoch and the surrounding area were the first places in the Barossa Valley to grow wine. A certain Mr. Gilbert had grown wine on an acre of land in Pewsey Vale in 1847 , as had Johann Gramp wine on Jacob's Creek and had made the first wine in the area around 1850.
