The MÁV series 301 was an express train - steam locomotive series of the Hungarian State Railways MÁV for express train traffic on main lines from Budapest .

history

Around 1910 there was a strong increase in travel throughout Europe, including Hungary. The increasing train weights called for a more powerful locomotive than the 220 series . At the same time as the new Pacific locomotives of the Western European railways appeared in Hungary around 1911, the heavy, triple-coupled express locomotive series 301 of this design.

The locomotive was built in two versions: as a four-wheel and as a four-cylinder compound machine . Two machines each were built in 1911 in order to be able to carry out comparison runs between the two versions. Although the compound machine was superior to the quadruple machine in terms of performance and consumption, in which all four cylinders received live steam, the decision was made for the series for the quadruple version because of the better usability and maintenance.

The locomotives of the 301 series proved themselves completely in operation and could have fully satisfied the traction requirements of the heavy express trains. With these locomotives, train funding reached one of its high points at MAV . The First World War prevented the procurement of further units.

During a test run, a locomotive carried a 700 t express train on the route from Budapest to Bratislava within 145 minutes, reaching 120 km / h on the level route. As planned, it carried 440 t at 90 km / h on this route. Before the First World War, it was considered one of the most powerful and beautiful steam locomotives in Europe and caused a sensation.

Some locomotives in this series also ended up in Romania . It is not surprising that these machines were around 50 years old. 1966–1968 they were taken out of service and most of them scrapped. Two vehicles, the 301.006 and the 301.016, have been preserved, one of them in the Budapest Railway History Park .

technical features

The locomotives were particularly impressive machines at that time, highlighted by their appearance. Its massive appearance, the conical smoke chamber door and the wind cutting driver's cab also underlined the train performance achieved.

The specified technical data relate to the quadruple machine, the compound machine had slight deviations. The drive of all machines was carried out in the two-axis version according to de Glehn . The outer cylinders worked on the second axis, the inner ones on the first axis designed as a bolster axis.

The locomotives had strikingly large grate and heating surfaces. The boiler pressure was 12 bar in the quadruple machines and 16 bar in the compound machines. The ratio of 1/50 between the grate and heating surface indicates the use of Hungarian coal with a medium calorific value.

In these machines, a spring-loaded boiler safety valve was used for the first time , which is an improvement over the pop valve.
