The MÁV IVd were freight train - Tender locomotives of Hungarian State Railways (MÁV).
history
Since the MÁV had not had any positive experience with the curve running with quadruple coupled locomotives (see MÁV IVc ), it was decided to purchase mallet locomotives for freight train service on routes with steep inclines and curves. The Budapest machine factory chose the same wheel dimensions for its design as for the MÁV IVc category. The size of the boiler hardly differed from this category either. A compound engine was chosen for propulsion. Instead of the Heusinger control, the Gölsdorf angle lever control was used on some machines , but this did not catch on in Hungary.
Their intended application had the vehicles 30 from 1898 to 1902 built on the Karst routes , on the way to Petrozsény and the Carpathian ( Brassó - Predeal ). After the tenders had been equipped with Westinghouse brakes, the locomotives could also be used in front of passenger trains.
