Máirtín Ó Direáin [ ˈmɑːrʲtʲiːɲ oːdʲiˈrʲɑːɲ ], Martin O'Direan (anglicized) (* 1910 in Fearann an Choirce on the island of Inis Mór ; † 1988 in Dublin ) was an Irish poet .

Life

Máirtín Ó Direáin, son of a small farmer, grew up on the island of Inishmore in the Aran Islands . Up to the age of 16 he spoke only Irish . After graduating from school, he worked for several years from 1928 as an employee in the main post office of Galway . He also worked for a while as secretary for the Gaelic League , which aims to promote the Irish language . In 1938 he moved to Dublin and worked there in the civil service, most of the time in the Ministry of Education. He spent his old age there.

Ó Direáin wrote mostly poetry and only in Irish . While this made him an excellent representative of Irish literature , he remained largely unknown outside of Ireland. During his time in Galway, he played at the Irish-language Taibhdhearc Theater. His first collection of poems, Coinnle Geala ( Eng . "Burning candles"), appeared in 1942. Dánta Aniar ( Eng . "Poems from the West") followed a year later . Both publications were made at their own expense. Further volumes of poetry and the autobiographical work Feamainn Bhealtaine (1961, German: “Mai-Seetang”) followed until the 1980s .

His work is primarily characterized by the tensions between town and country and between tradition and modernity . In Irish literary criticism today he is considered to be one of the Irish-speaking poets who have brought Irish poetry most strongly into the modern age. It is also very well received in the English-language literary scene in Ireland. A biographical essay from 2002 on Máirtín Ó Direáin by Isobel Ní Ríain describes Ó Direáin's journey in 1938 from his home island to the Irish capital Dublin, where he spent fifty years of his life.
