Máximo Tajes Cáceres (born November 23, 1852 in Canelones , † November 21, 1912 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan military and politician .

Life

Tajes belonged to the Partido Colorado and was elected President of Uruguay by Congress on November 18, 1886 . He held this position until March 1, 1890. He was the last president in the phase of the military dictatorship (1876–1890). During his tenure, he first pushed through a decision to ban his political opponent and predecessor in office, Máximo Santos , in Congress . He then worked towards the restoration of the constitution and the elimination of the military leaders who supported his predecessor. Julio Herrera y Obes was elected to succeed him. On March 27, 1897, the office of Uruguayan ambassador to Argentina was transferred to him, but Domingo Mendilaharsu took over from October 27 that same year .
