Julián Basilio Herrera y Obes Martínez (born January 9, 1841 in Montevideo , † August 6, 1912 ibid) was a Uruguayan politician, lawyer and journalist .

He belonged to the Partido Colorado and was Foreign Minister of Uruguay in 1872 under Tomás Gomensoro . He sat from February 15, 1873 to January 19, 1875 as a member of the Department of Montevideo in the Cámara de Representantes . He was then in exile until 1880. Julio Herrera y Obes was Máximo Tajes ' adviser , whom he succeeded as the first civil president after the military dictatorship (1875–1890). He held the office of President from March 1, 1890 to March 1, 1894. During this time the executive wanted to strengthen its position compared to that of the legislature. However, this policy was opposed by part of the Colorados under the leadership of José Batlle y Ordóñez , the son of former President Lorenzo Batlle y Grau . In 1894, after Duncan Stewart had taken over the role of interim president of Uruguay, Juan Idiarte Borda was elected to succeed Julio Herrera y Obes after heated internal debates . From February 9, 1895 to January 4, 1897 and again from February 10, 1897 to February 4 of the following year, he exercised a mandate as senator and in this capacity represented the Soriano Department in the Senate . In the following years he went into exile again for a few years. Julio Herrera y Obes, who is the uncle of Julio Herrera y Reissig , worked as an editor for the newspapers Revista Literaria and El Chubasco as part of his journalistic activities .
