Museum in the Rostock Villa

The Moravian-Silesian Museum was until 2015 a local museum in the listed Rostock villa in the municipality of Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria.

history

From a private collection that Ms. Annie Theuer-Krause (* 1898, † March 9, 1973, Vienna) built up in Vienna from 1918, the First Austrian-Silesian Museum of Local History in Vienna 1 was created in 1957 ; in Singerstrasse 13. The holdings were based on holdings from the Silesian Farmers' Theater and the archive of the Humanitarian Association of Austrians from Silesia . In 1969 the Silesia collection area was expanded to include the former Crown Land of Moravia and the museum was renamed the Moravian-Silesian Museum of Local History . In 1973 the museum moved to the listed Rostock villa in Klosterneuburg . In addition, a fire museum operated by the Klosterneuburg volunteer fire department was housed in the villa. The villa owned by the State of Lower Austria was sold to private customers at the end of 2015 and all users were terminated. The museum therefore had to be closed at the end of 2015. Neither the state of Lower Austria nor the municipality of Klosterneuburg were able to provide adequate, inexpensive rooms. In the following years, the museum's holdings were handed over to various institutions in Lower Austria.

collection

The holdings were divided into a library with books, maps, postcards, magazines and documents, as well as a folklore collection with clothing, paintings, dishes and various everyday objects. There was also a so-called Beskid room in the museum. Special exhibitions from this easternmost area of Austrian Silesia were shown here. Before that it was also known as the Duchy of Teschen . After the museum closed, the entire collection was transferred to the State of Lower Austria. There it was integrated into the state collections, the state archive and the state library.

Due to the establishment of the collection after the First World War , objects from the time of Austria-Hungary are also in stock. The Moravian-Silesian Museum was not only known as an exhibition center but also a documentation archive that was visited for studies and research. Local chronicles, magazines, address books, school news and postcards served as secondary sources for family researchers (genealogists).

museum

The premises included an exhibition of traditional costumes, a library and work room, and other exhibition rooms in which changing special exhibitions were shown. The museum showed the close historical connections between Austria and the Moravian-Silesian region. The Moravian-Silesian Museum was run as an association by volunteers. Since 2005 the museum has met the criteria of the Austrian museum seal of approval .
