Man awakening
As Männelwecken , regional and Männlwecken , Männelkloppen , Mannelaufwecktog is especially in the Erzgebirge , the annual retrieving and setting up the Christmas characters, Incense ( "Male"), candle arches and pyramids referred. The annual ritual introduces the festive season in Advent .
After the Sunday of the Dead , in the week before the first Advent , the Christmas decorations are taken from the attic or from the cellar, put together, repaired if necessary, repainted and added. The very traditional Erzgebirge people put as many angels and miners in the windows as there are daughters and sons in the household.
In some regions the men of the place meet, only the men, and bring their most valuable - exclusively handmade - Christmas figure with them. By knocking loudly on the wooden table in the assembly room, the figures are “woken up” and the incense cones of the smokers are lit for the first time. On the Saturday before the first Advent, the decoration is set up and then the beginning of Advent is celebrated with a festive coffee drink or dinner. At dusk, the family gathers for the festive lighting of the candles. Traditionally, the pyramid is often pushed for the first time afterwards. The lighting of the lights and the pyramid pushing are usually accompanied by drinking a bitter herbal schnapps .
Sonja Ebart describes in her poem Dar Mannelaufwecktog ... that in the week before the 1st Advent the Mannelaufwecktog is:
With a basket it goes up to the stalls,
come your husbands now wake up!
It's Christmas and Jesus Christ, the lovely creature,
you should welcome me! […]
Everyone comes, as is due,
marched out of their boxes.
The local poet Erich Lang begins his famous song 's Raachermannel with the Mannelwecken:
Gahr fer Gahr is the Advent of n stalls up, a man is woken up: Kumm, nu you get up! [...]
