The Mässersee is a mountain lake in the Upper Valais Alps in the Binntal .

geography

The mountain path to the Geisspfadsee and the Geisspfadpass lead past the Mässersee. The Mässersee is the smallest of the four mountain lakes in the Binntal and is located on a grass terrace at an altitude of 2130 m. The Mässersee is fed by a larger and a few small mountain streams. The runoff flows into the Binna and then into the Rhone . The Mässersee has an area of approximately 1 hectare and is a maximum of 2.5 m deep. Since the lake is only shallow, it sometimes heats up to 22 ° C in midsummer, despite its considerable height, and invites you to swim.

Flora and fauna

The Mässersee is roughly at the tree line , which means that on the north side of the valley there are pine forests and blueberry bushes, while on the south side the terrain rises and is only overgrown with herbs and grass. There are also numerous scree fields there.

There are no fish in the lake, but there are dozens of toads that lay their spawn in the shallow water of the Mässersee. There are also various species of birds such as jays or alpine choughs and birds of prey such as golden eagles and hawks . The mats on the banks of the Mässersee offer ideal conditions for marmots and chamois and ibex are also available. Snake species such as grass snakes and dice snakes have also been spotted here.

tourism

There are only a few tourist facilities on the Mässersee. Only a small number of barbecue areas and a few benches are available. Because of its warm water, the lake still attracts a good dozen guests a day in midsummer (July, August). The Mässersee can be reached from Binn with a hiking time of a good three hours, from Im Feld it takes two to two and a half hours.
