location

The Mönchstieg 21 building is located in the Hasserode district of Wernigerode , about 150 meters from the Westerntor on the north side of the Mönchstieg street, shortly after it branches off from Friedrichstrasse .

Architecture and history

It is a two-story half-timbered house with an attic from the 18th century. The front side of the building facing the street was built with functional, simple half-timbering. The year of construction of the house can be determined as immediately after 1735.

The building was owned by the Fürst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode family until 1930 and was inhabited by the Princely Chamber Councilor Otto Braulke, who was assigned his official residence here in 1912, before he moved to the villa of the builder Carl Frühling on Burgberg 9a in Wernigerode in 1930 .

In 1912, the chief forester's office had finally lost its purpose as a dwelling for forest officials, because until then the Forestry Councilor Grasshoff had lived here and before him until 1900 the Forestry Councilor Roth with his family.

The old forest ranger's office is a stately half-timbered building from the first half of the 18th century. Its predecessor became a victim of flames. The devastating fire was not caused by an accident, on the contrary. The royal Prussian forester Petz, who lives there, set a fire in his own house. It burned to the ground. Petz was unequivocally convicted as a perpetrator in the court process. The judgment passed provided for his beheading with the sword. The execution took place in 1735. It was one of the last public executions in Wernigerode.

In the local monument register , the house is listed as a monument under registration number 094 03306.
