Möwebucht (officially English Möwe Bay ; afrikaans Möwebaai ) is a sea bay on the south Atlantic coast in northwestern Namibia , around 70 kilometers north of Terrace Bay and 10 kilometers north of the mouth of the Hoanib , the unofficial border between Damaraland and Kaokoveld .

It is the administrative headquarters of the Skeleton Coast National Park .

The bay was named after the ship SMS Möwe , which was the first to track down South African fur seals here in 1884 . Again a patrol boat of the Namibian Navy was named after the bay.

history

Since at least the 1970s there have been plans to expand Möwebucht as a fishing port, with the nearby Cape Cross as a port for general cargo . In this context, a railway line to the Kreuzkap was also evaluated

In 2018, the Shipwreck Lodge, a luxury accommodation for tourists, opened 45 kilometers north of Möwebucht .
